Phys. 107, 8854 - 8865 (1997) Abstract: JILA, University of Coloradoand National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Department of Chemistryand Biochemistry, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado 80309-0440 Design, performance, and applications of a pulsed, single modeoptical parametric oscillator (OPO) for studies of high resolutionspectroscopy and photodissociation dynamics are presented. Singlemode operation is achieved by resonantly seeding a four-mirrorOPO ring cavity with a tunable, continuous wave (cw) ring dyelaser, providing continuous scanning capability at near Fouriertransform limited resolution [Dn = 160(20) MHz]with peak output energies ³ 10mJ. The high spectral brightness of this OPO light source issufficient to saturate Dv= 3 stretching transitions in OH, NH, and CH vibrationalmanifolds, which makes feasible quantum state-selected multipleresonance spectroscopies at 0.005 cm-1 resolution. The capabilityof this single mode OPO is explicitly demonstrated via (i) vOH= 3 ¬ 0 overtone spectroscopyof HOD, (ii) near-IR optical saturation studies of H2Oin the |03-> overtone vibrational manifold, (iii) highresolution LIF Dopplerimetry of OH radicals, and (iv) IR/UVmultiple resonance spectroscopy of Ar-H2O molecularclusters. a) Present address: National Instituteof Standards and Technology, Gaithersbburg, Maryland 20899 |
