Abstract: Second-harmonic generation in the layered semiconductor GaS excited with the wavelength lambda = 1579 nm is investigated with the Maker fringe technique. It is shown that the second-harmonic signal originates from domains in the crystal, which consist of the noncentrosymmetric C-5(3 upsilon) polytype. The results are in good agreement with X-ray diffraction data.
